Today proves that the majority of you are smarter than I thought.  Seven joined in for a nice breakfast at Vassar and good conversation.  The riding was better than I thought, and did have the possibility of turning on us at any moment.  I did test the quality of my long johns at 80mph into a 20mph headwind and a warming 30 degrees temperature. Can we say fairing, or maybe aerostitch pants?

Sorry the front came through 4 hours early and glad that you checked your weather before you left.  This was the last ride for the year as the coming week really sucks and of course there is that Christmas thing next week.  If the weather changes to the good for the week of the 29th we may try something, but I wouldn't be banking on it.

The good news is I got am email from Jerry and he says that the website does now exist.  There is still some things he needs to do before we can use it.  So sometime soon a few will be given the address to test it and make sure it does what we want and if so it will then be released to everyone.

Hopefully this will give us a place to stay in touch, plan rides and explore connected sites.  It will take time for it to grow to its potential, but I think it will be both fun and functional from the start.  The website should be open to anyone with a computer; the forum on the site will be for registered users.  That is about the only way of controlling content.  Not a big brother type thing, but there are those that want to spoil what others have and being able to have some say on who is on the forum might help to keep out what we don't want.

One of the ideas ol John and I have discussed is a lap around Kansas.  A five day trip roughly circumnavigating the state in about 300+ mile days.  Each day would have an event such as the air museum in Liberal, or other things of interest. I like day trips such as the museum in Marquette.  Endless numbers of things we can do on our bikes.  The forum will let us share what we have found and help plan the next adventure.

I thank Jerry for the hard work he has put in on this project. I am sure it will help not only promote our group but spread the word on the two lane roads of Kansas and the great "finds" on them.

Have a nice Holiday and a big Ho!  Ho! HO! from the guy with the white beard.

Ok guys here's the deal, I'm bored.  The weather for next week really sucks and this looks like our last chance maybe this year to get together. I had thought about today, but it is going to be really windy today, windy tomorrow but not as bad.  They are supposed to hold overnight and will give us a decent starting time tomorrow, they will start falling in the afternoon so don't linger to long and get caught.

I know a lot of you go to church on Sunday's but maybe this  time you can look up and say thanks as you roll the scoot out of the shed. Why else would we have nice days in the winter if we weren't supposed to use them?

I was wanting to pick a place a little more central but I know Green acres can roll with the flow when it comes to the size of the group, and I have now guess how many will make it.  They have a breakfast buffet until 1100 and I told them we would be there around 1030.  They open at six so Larry and Larry won't have to wait outside.

It’s mornings like this that make me glad I'm still not a switchman.  I know there are other jobs that are worse, but I do remember spending all night out in weather like this.  One of the reasons I started growing a beard.  Get out on a frosty night and a layer of ice would form over the beard and then your face stayed warm.  Somewhere Becky has a picture of me just getting off my bike at the six hour St. Valentines Day Massacre at the Jeeps track in Wichita.  That is a one-bike two-man hare scramble that is held the closest Sunday to St. Valentine’s day.  That was the year is snowed 9" during the race and had been snowing pretty heavy before the race.  They always have a parade lap so you know where the course is.  Eighty-five motorcycles were led around the track (probably about 3.5 miles) and when we got to the start line we couldn't see where we had been, so took a second lap just to break a trail. All in all it was an interesting day.  Isn't it amazing what we do in the name of fun?  I think the ten or so years I spent on dirt bikes were the ones I enjoyed most.  If I had of stayed with it I might still have some riding skills and weigh 100lbs less.

So much for the "old days".  I am sending this out to say I'm not planning a ride for the coming week.  The temps are going to be lower than what most of us would enjoy.  Will be a good week to get that last minute shopping done (only 20 days left), and get together with your friends for a cup of java and a chat.  I'll keep an eye on the weather channel and if a nice day comes up, we'll take advantage of it.

So as the old guy in the red suit says, Yo! Ho! Ho! And a, well you know the rest.

Ride safe

Once again I may have pulled the trigger a little early.  It looks like Tuesday is going to be the best day by about ten degrees next week. But of course that can change several times between now and then.  The downside of not going on Wednesday is of course the folks that have arranged to have that day off to ride.  But ten degrees is ten degrees. We are not far from the rides being at Dover, Burlingame, Scranton, etc. If you are looking at a map those places are about 15 miles from my house. For now I am trying to stick close to the I-70 corridor to make it as equal as I can. I know this still doesn't work for some but it is what it is.

The place we are going to is owned by an old Emporia boy.  He is a little older than I am so I didn't now him well.  I did work with his younger brothers and knew them, both hot rodders.  Neil was a rider, don't know if he still does or not. I rode a couple of enduros he was in back in the sixties. As I recall we both would have been better off staying at home. Anyway it is said that he serves up a pretty good meal and I hope that is true.  See you Tuesday at.

Bucky sure did us a favour yesterday.  Like Richard I was going to skip this week due to the holiday. Bucky sent me an email suggesting a ride and I thought about it a few minutes and decided why not.  I really figured that there would be maybe 10 or so of us so I picked Beto Junction mostly because they have a big enough business that our group isn't really a big thing for them.

The turnout was almost shocking to me.  There were 31 bikes and a car for 33 folks.  I was even more surprised when Junior and a few riders from the Wichita area showed.  Always nice to have an intermingling of riders from the different areas. Hopefully this coming year we can have more of that.

Looking forward to the new year is sometimes a little scary.  As you all know Larry and Larry started the Eastern group for the Romeos.  Richard, like us has rides in a radius around where he lives.  He lives in Lindsborg and so when he goes west or south it makes it a full day event for those that live in this area.  That's nice sometimes but on a hot summer day it is just too much.  Larry and Larry "talked" me into having a lunch ride in this area when it was 150 miles or farther to the Central ride. It started with a handful going and now we have turnouts in the 50s at times. So far there hasn't been a ride I didn't enjoy or a person I met that I didn't like. Going into the spring and summer we will need to remember to show patience as we will undoubtedly have larger groups that there will be seating at some of these places. As Bucky says "We're retired, we have the time and this is for fun".

On the looking forward part of the Romeos, a member that joined us this year has taken the bit in his mouth and is setting up a web site.  It should be ready around the first of the year if all goes well.  I had been trying to get this worked out for some time and my lack of computer knowledge was rearing its ugly head at every turn.  Fortunately Jerry doesn't have my techno disability.

The web site will be available for anyone to look at.  It will have information for upcoming rides for both the Central and Eastern groups.  It will post the pictures of past rides, (that I am so poor about doing).
It will have an invitation only forum.  That means that sometime after it is working you will be able to sign on and have a personal password that gets you to the forum.  Once there you can post what you want to or reply to something already posted.  This will include bikes for sale, lets go for a ride somewhere, or anything else. The site will be monitored so please keep language and subject matter proper.  The invitation part is to try to keep out the people that always want to spoil things that others have.  The Central group will be extended the same invitation as the eastern riders; it may take some time getting that done as I don't have all their email address.

All that said we are closing out a great year of riding.  Both the Central and Eastern groups have had record numbers at rides.  In my opinion we have helped show the positive side of motorcycling.  Both Richard and I have had restaurants contact us and checking back with each place we go have left positive experiences. Several places we have been, local residents have stopped and thanked us for coming to their town. All this is good but not as good as the roads we have been down, the great amounts of fertilizer we spread, and last but not least, we have had some great, outstanding, pie.

hope to see you next week

Don

I know I said I wasn't planning a lunch this week due to the holiday, but I did also say that if enough of you wanted to go I would set one up.  Two were enough.
That may be all that show but who cares, we'll have a good time.

No out of the way little place this time, no Mom and Pop Cafe in Smalltown, Ks.  In fact I don't think there is a town within five miles of this place.  But it is convenient and since I haven't a clue of the turnout it is big enough that it won't make a lot of difference. To top all that off, it has a lunch buffet, even big John can get full. By now I'm sure you have all guessed the mystery place.

Hope to see as many as possible but understand that many will be tied up for the Holiday.  If I don't see you at Beto have a good Holiday.

Here I sat, the computer says it's 38 degrees out and I'm planning a motorcycle ride.  A couple of years ago the 38 degrees would have been fine but I do like it a little warmer than that now.  But the weatherman says that we will have a better day next Wednesday that we had last. And we all know the weatherman is 100% right.

We are hitting repeats this time of year and the place we are going to is one we have been to at least once a year and usually twice for several years. At one time is was nationally known for it's BBQ, now it's just a good place to go. Sitting on I35 it will be a quick ride down for the K.C. riders and there are some interesting roads for all to hit.  I'm thinking that after lunch a quick ride across Colorado will get us to Vassar for some PIE.  We may need to have Larry control Larry; I've heard things about him and Vassar.
By now I'm sure you have all guessed where we are going.

As usual this time of year or anytime, use your own judgment on how you want to get there.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with driving instead of riding.  In fact If I were doing a bike of the week like Richard, Ted's '62 vette would have been my choice.  Whoever had that nice Honda F sitting at the north end of the block, that is a nice looking ride.  Back to cars, I think it would be neat if Ted got out one of his Chevys that needed aired out.  Mo got the old Packard in the breeze, Bill his old Chevy. I think Ron from Edgerton has some nice cars and you know me and names, but there is one of us that has some neat Mopars.  I think out of the 135 on the mailing list 134 of us like about anything with a motor in it.  I won't mention Harry's name but one of us just likes to ride’m, not look at them.  However Harry was seen waxing his new scooter, maybe being a grandpa has changed him.

As always ride safe

It seems like ages since I have sent one of these out.  Actually the last lunch was a day early and this is a little late watching the weather.  If all goes normal, in about 20 min. the forecast for the entire week will change.  But Hey, we pulled it off last week. I counted 20 chilly riders at Oski last week. Might have even been a couple I didn't get counted.  The downside of the spread in time that we arrive is when the group is smaller we tend to miss each other.  But again we had a nice but cool ride, stayed dry, and that beats sitting at home any day. I do regret that changing dates makes it impossible for some to join us, but with forecast like last week, it's try to fit it in or don't go. As I mentioned last week as the weather cools the notice will be shorter.  So will the rides and that means for some it will not be reasonable, so call your ride buddies and go over to Micky D's.

This week I had a nice place that Don Hall had suggested that was just about a perfect half-way between K.C. and Topeka.  But I decided not to go there. The reason being that Wed. is looking to be a nice but cool day.  So maybe a little more ride should fit the forecast.  Bring you Christmas list, across the street from where we are going to eat is a lady named Sandra that does nice embroidery work on shirts, jackets or about anything.  She will ship it to you in time for Christmas, so you can be a little different in your selection this year.  Mamma will think you went out of your way thinking about her and all you had to do was have a good lunch.  Speaking of lunch here we go, and Larry it won't do you any good to beat me this time they don't open until 1100.

I haven't eaten at this place but stopped by one day and it all looked good.  She has Pizza by the slice, Salad bar, and Sandwiches, so should be something for everyone..  Had a long chat with the owner and she really wants us to show, so I am sure she will do a good job for us.  This is one of those little towns that is really struggling to stay alive, lets give a hand and make ourselves happy in the process.
Hope to see you all there. I know it's going to be a ride for Tom, Walt, and a few others, but at least John can break out his six pac. Maybe both of them and Corwin can ride one.

Ride safe

Don

Ps.  Jerry sent me some pictures of Oski. and I screwed up somehow getting them on the newsletter.

Hello again to all of you that went south. I hope you had good trips. Things here were a little wet and the turnout at Council Grove were Three from Salina, one from Andover and Paul and myself.  It is a good place to eat however, I would suggest trying it if you are in the area.

The only thing of note is that Harry became a Grandpa. First his daughter got a Lab puppy a few months back, I think to train Harry with, then she had a baby boy, mother, son, and grandpa all doing well.  When I stopped by the Kawasaki shop yesterday they ask why Harry was hunting for a KLR with a 12 in seat height. Sounds like Harry is bonding.

Moving on to our lunch ride. As I mentioned before when it gets later in the season I attempt to find better weather for us. This does not always work but I do think we get a few better rides in. Yesterday was supposed to be a nice day and we not only got rained on but also hail. All that said, from now on I will try to pick a better day and hope it works.

This coming week the weatherman has been saying that the rain will move in Tuesday evening and stay for a day or two. So trying to stay in the middle of the week as much as possible Tuesday will be the day.

I hope the day change works out and even more so I hope that I get us into better weather than a storm. As usual any feedback is welcome. I intend to stay more in the area between Topeka and K.C. so we may be hitting some places a second or third time. If you know of a good place let me know. And let me know what is comfort zone for weather and distance. I intend to keep this going all winter when we can find days that have clear roads and not too low of temperatures. The guideline I used last year was clear roads, above freezing at 0900, and a high for the day close to 50 degrees. The thinking was a safe ride, maybe a little chilly in the morning to decent coming home. I figure most of us (except Corwin, John, and of course Larry and his other brother) leave home around 0900 or a little later to make it.
Anyway let me know what you want and I'll try to do it. Ride safe and hope to see you Tuesday.

We have sure been hitting it lucky on weather. It was a little chilly but not bad heading for Reading but absolutely perfect when we came out from lunch. Our timing was perfect as the locals were coming in when most of us was standing around.  The official counter said there were 38, well actually 37 happy riders there and Larry. I shouldn't pick on Larry so much but since there is more than one of them I can always say it was the other one I was picking on.  I think for the money that was about the best meal we have had, and Paul was beaming about the gooseberry pie. Nice ride to Burlingame and after a break there Paul and I made a little loop through Eskridge on the way home. Great ride, a good meal and good conversation (that's BS to you guys) that's what the Romeos is all about. To think some people retire to a rocking chair.

This is going to be a brief email. I have a mower gassed and ready to go and 5 acres that I won't get done before sunset if I don't hurry.  So our ride for the 15th will be a joint ride as many will be going to Marble Falls. Weather man is saying it's going to be a great day, of course this time of year a little cooler.

The town is a little west of Emporia and 7 miles to the north of Emporia.  Paved roads come in from three directions so easy access from about anywhere.  A word of warning, they have road construction from hell going on the west end of Emporia for the turnpike access. So if you come that way be aware and careful.

The place of course

The Breckenridge Country Cafe
622 Main St.
Americus Kansas 66835
620-443-5612

There is a nice little park across the street to visit before and after lunch.  We have been here before and they had a good meal ready for us.

Those of you going to Dogpatch have a good time.  Those of you staying behind come on down and enjoy the day.

This will be the last time we venture very much west of Topeka for the rest of the year.  Weather cooling and I will try to keep the rides shorter, but as you know it is hard to take care of everybody.  Also as the winter season rolls in I will try to watch the weather and pick days that look the best, this doesn’t always work but we can get more rides squeezed in that way.  Some of these will be suited for the Topeka/Lawrence riders more that those out of the K.C area. So if it's too far to ride due to weather, either jump in a car and join us or call around and do something close to home.

As always ride safe and thanks for making this the best year ever for the Romeos.  We have two groups that are bringing in numbers each that one couldn't muster a year ago.  But remember it's not about how many, it's how good of time we have.

Don
